Spousal Sponsorship Categories
Canada’s Spousal Sponsorship Program Includes:
- Spouse: Legally recognized marriages, including husbands and wives.
- Common-Law Partner: A live-in relationship with your partner.
- Conjugal Partner: A committed relationship equivalent to marriage for at least one year, living apart due to valid reasons (e.g., visa issues, job relocation).
Eligibility to Sponsor Your Spouse, Partner, or Child:
- You can sponsor if you meet the following criteria:
- You’re at least 18 years old.
- You’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- You can prove you're not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability.
- You can provide for the basic needs of those you want to sponsor.
Sponsor your adopted child
To sponsor an adopted child from another country, you’ll need to complete two steps:
- The Adoption Process
- The Immigration Process (including sponsorship and permanent residency applications).
Requirements to Sponsor an Adopted Child:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Live in Canada.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
Sponsor your relatives
When you sponsor a relative to become a permanent resident of Canada, you must commit to
- financially supporting them and their accompanying family members
- making sure they won’t need to ask the government for social assistance
Eligible Relatives to Sponsor:
- Orphaned Brother, Sister, Nephew, Niece, or Grandchild
- Related to you by blood or adoption.
- Under 18 years old.
- Single (not married or in a common-law relationship).
- Both parents must be deceased.
- Other Relatives
- Sponsor one relative of any age if you meet all of the following conditions:
- Related by blood or adoption.
- No other living relative can be sponsored instead.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
